More Reasons to Buy Handmade

It’s just a little over 2 weeks away from Christmas and even the last minute shoppers are starting to get their gift buying groove on and so I am back with another installment of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas and  four more reasons why you should buy handmade gifts this year.

Day 11 – Custom
Another advantage of shopping handmade is that you can get almost anything, even if it doesn’t exist yet. With big companies you are limited to what they offer but working with an individual artist or craftsman often means you have a lot more options for personalized gifts and custom, one of a kind items.

(Looking for a one of a kind piece of literary jewelry for a special book lover. Check out what some of my past customers have had to say about their custom pieces and then contact me to discuss a custom design)

 Day 12 – Connected
Makers of handmade items are obsessed and passionate about what they do, which means that they are very knowledgeable about their fields and about the handmade community in general. This means that you get the benefit of an expert to help you pick out the perfect item. Picking up a funky cuff bracelet for your favorite fashionista? Odds are that the artist who made it can point you in the direction of a designer who has the perfect jacket to go with it!  Looking for the ultimate book lover gift for your Jane Austen obsessed sister but haven’t read the books yourself? I am sure a certain literature – obsessed maker of of book-themed jewelry could help you pick something out (and tell you where you can get a great matching purse too!)

Day 13 – Quirky
It doesn’t matter what fandoms, hobbies, or interests you have, you are sure to find a great artist or craftsmen that is just as obsessed as you are and who loves to express their obsession by creating unique, quirky items that you won’t find in a department store. This makes gifts for those hard to shop for friends and family so much easier.

Day 14 – Cool
All of this adds up to gifts that are just plain cool. Rather than having something that is just another thing, handmade items are personal, unique, and have a story behind them. They lend themselves to your personal style and interests and set trends, rather than follow them.

More of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas

More of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas

I am a little embarrassed to admit it but the holiday rush is a little bit more rushed than I had anticipated and I keep falling behind on my blogging. My days have  been filled with filling orders, working on a top-secret project (more on that in a later post), introducing new pieces to the shop, finishing my read of A Christmas Carol for the book club, and trying to fit in my own Christmas gifts before the holiday arrives in less than three weeks. (ACK!) I’ve been making a lot of progress everyday but I think daily posts are not going to work out for the foreseeable future, so from here on in, I am going to do the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas in slightly bigger post with more than one reason at a time. With that said, here are this week’s reasons why you should have a handmade Christmas this year:

Day 7 – Convenience
Shopping for handmade gifts in online marketplaces like Etsy is quick, easy, and convenient. Instead of braving cold weather and crowded malls, you can browse in the comfort of your own home, on your lunch break at work, or while waiting for your son to get out of his piano lesson.

Day 8 – Customer Service
Small creative businesses give great customer service with lots of personal attention and often offer samples, free gift wrap and other little tokens of their appreciation to thank you for your business. (That reminds me. Have I mentioned that I am offering free holiday gift wrap in my Etsy shop this month?)

Day 9 – Community
Many handmade artists maintain active blogs, websites, and social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest where you can get to know the artist, their process, their inspirations, and other behind the scenes information that makes the gifts you buy from them even more interesting and special. By following your favorite artists, craftsmen, and Etsy sellers on social media, you will not only be in the know about new and upcoming products, sales, and special events, but it can be a lot of fun to make friends with others who love some of the same things you do! For example, the C. S. Literary Jewelry Facebook page has a great community of book lovers who are always up for talking about books, new and old.  On Wednesday night, my Twitter feed is filled with great handmade items from a wide range of artists and craftsmen for #HandmadeHourUSA.

(If you haven’t already, I would love it if you would join in all the fun by following me on Facebook and on Twitter)

Day 10 – Collaboration
Another great reason to be part of a handmade community is the chance to collaborate with the artist. Creative business owners like me often post sneak previews of in-progress products or ask for opinions and by giving them feedback, you become a part of the process and help that crafts-person offer the best products possible.

A little while ago, I posted about some new fairytale jewelry that I was designing on Facebook and not only got some great feedback on how to make these great bangle bracelets better but even got suggestions of what stories people wanted me to add to the series next.

Fairytale Bangle Bracelets
Shown Top to Bottom: Cinderella Bangle Bracelet, Prince Charming Bangle Bracelet, and Frog Prince Bangle Bracelet

And with that, I have to get back to my workspace and get a few more orders made up and sent out. There is still time for you to add your Christmas gifts to my list but you may not want to wait much longer. My shipping cutoffs are: Dec. 8th (International) and Dec. 15th (U.S.) with regular shipping and Dec. 15th (International) and Dec. 20th (U.S.) with upgraded shipping. 30 Days of Handmade Christmas: Days 4 – 6

With the holiday and the rush of getting ready for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday,  I have fallen behind in my posting for the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas but I am back now, ready to catch and give you 3 more reasons why you should buy handmade gifts this year.

Day 4: Buying Handmade Supports Artists
Originally, Day 4 of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas was set to be posted on Thanksgiving, a day when we give thanks for all the blessings in our lives, including the blessings of a roof over our heads, food on the table, and the health and well-being of our families. For many craftspeople and artists, your support is what helps us play the rent, buy the groceries, and take care of the people we love. And for that, I am truly grateful.

Day 5: Buying Handmade Supports Small Business
Yesterday was Small Business Saturday, a day where we support the entrepreneurs who serve our community and contribute to our economy. While many folks associate this with local “Mom and Pop shops,” many of the benefits to supporting small businesses on Main Street also apply to artists and craftspeople who sell their work in craft fairs, festivals, and in online marketplaces like Etsy. Believe me, there is nothing smaller than a business, like mine, where the manufacturing, marketing, sales, shipping, and more are all done by 1 or 2 people. And the money we make from our sales goes directly back into our community in a cycle that benefits everyone.

Day 6 – Buying Handmade Is An Investment In The Future
Supporting creative businesses and the makers of handmade items lets artists continue doing what they love and that means that the next time you go looking for something special, either for yourself or as a gift, that there will still be wonderful, creative items from you to choose from.

(Click here to see more reasons to to have a “Handmade Christmas ) and I will see you all tomorrow for Cyber Monday! Don’t forget that there’s still time to get great Cyber Monday savings in my Etsy shop, today and tomorrow. 30 Days of Handmade Christmas – Day 3: Tradition

Tomorrow, families across the country will be gathering together and observing wonderful family traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. Whether it’s making mom’s pumpkin pie recipe, setting the table with your great-grandmother’s china, or playing a game of touch football with the kids while the turkey finishes cooking, the holidays are a great time for honoring special memories and traditions.

This is why an appreciation for tradition is today’s reason to buy handmade gifts. (Click here to see more reasons to to have a “Handmade Christmas”).  Not only is making an item by hand a time-honored practice, but many indie artists and craftsmen keep traditional skills and crafts alive when they would otherwise have died out.  And even among those who use more modern techniques, you can find wonderful artists who incorporate traditional materials, styles, and motifs into their work or who are inspired by the great artist and craftsmen from past generations.

Little Women Novel Tea Necklace

You can also find meaningful, handmade gifts that tap into your own personal history and family traditions. For example, a few weeks ago I wrote about my family’s tradition of passing Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women from generation to generation and how the memory of a tea party spent chatting about our favorite Little Women characters with my grandmother inspired my Little Women Novel Tea Necklace. In a few weeks, it will be Christmas and I will be honoring my family’s tradition but giving my goddaughter her own tea set, a copy of Little Women, and one of my new child-sized Little Women necklaces. I know that we will have a lot of fun, drinking tea and reading together and I am sure I will tell her all about my grandmother, (her great-grandmother), and how she loved this book too.  Someday, Katrina may do the same with her daughter so that this wonderful book and the history of the generations of women in my family who have loved it will live on.

I hope you will consider starting a tradition of putting handmade gift beneath your Christmas tree.  Speaking of handmade gifts, I wanted to mention that we will be having a Black Friday Sale this weekend with free gift wrap and a store-wide 25% discount on my handmade literary jewelry and gifts for book lovers Visit our Etsy shop, C.S. Literary Jewelry at www.etsy.com/shop/csliteraryjewelry and use the coupon code: SANTA14 to receive your discount!

I will be back tomorrow with Day 4 of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas but since many of you will be spending the day with family and not on the internet,  I wanted to take this moment to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

30 Days of Handmade Christmas – Day 2

It’s Day 2 of the 30 Days of Handmade Christmas and my second reason for buying handmade gifts this Christmas is: Quality. While it seems that many holiday gifts these days are meant to be disposable or last only until the next upgrade, handmade gifts are made with love and care and meant to last.

I will be back tomorrow for Day 3, but in the meanwhile, I would like to invite you to visit my Etsy shop, C. S. Literary Jewelry, for great handmade gifts for book lovers, tea drinkers, theatre fans, and more. I will be having a store-wide sale for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday with free holiday gift wrap and a 25% discount with the coupon code: SANTA14. Click here for more information about my holiday sales, shipping, and everything you need to know for quick and easy holiday shopping!

30 Days of Handmade Christmas

As you go about looking for the perfect holiday gifts for your family, friends, and loved ones, I would like to urge you to consider putting some handmade gifts under your Christmas tree. Obviously, as someone who designs, makes, and sells handmade jewelry, I am more than a little biased towards the idea of a handmade Christmas but there are so many reasons why handmade gifts are amazing and I would like a chance to tell you about them. So starting tomorrow and continuing every day until Christmas Eve, I am going to be sharing all of the many reasons to buy handmade gifts this year and sharing some of my favorite handmade gift ideas that I have discovered in my travels around Etsy.

Tune in tomorrow for Day #1.
