Scheduling Scrooge

Scheduling Scrooge

After talking to some folks, it seems we have some interesting in doing an holiday edition of our virtual book club with a read of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. I am very excited to be re-visiting this Christmas classic and getting a chance to talk with other book lovers about it.

Here’s how this works.

Step 1 – We pick the book and read it. So that we are all on the same page – so to speak – there is a deadline for finishing the book and we all aim to be done on or close to that date.
Step 2 – I post discussion questions about the book for everyone to answer on their blogs or websites.
Step 3 – Everyone writes up their answers and sends me the link to their post for me to share here.
Step 4 – Everyone checks out the other posts and responses, leaving comments and having great discussions with our fellow book club members about the book.
Step 5 – Repeat.

I want to give everyone plenty of time to get through the book and write up their answers to the discussion questions while still being able to enjoy their holidays. I know the holiday season is crazy for everyone so I wanted to get some feedback on the timing before I finalized everything. Here’s what I was thinking:

November 14th – We start the book (although anyone who wants to get a head start can certainly pick up the book before then).
December 21st – We  finish reading the book and I post the discussion questions
December 27th – The deadline to share your responses to the questions

And then we spend the last week of the year chatting about the book.

There are 5 chapters to the book and this schedule gives us about 6 weeks to read it and there is some room for catching up also built into it so I think it is more than doable. But then again, I am a bit of a speed reader so I am not always the best judge of how long it takes to read something. Here’s where you guys come in.

I need to know what you think.  Is this schedule good or do you think I should move one or more of these dates? Should I push things earlier so they aren’t as close to the actual holiday or move more of it into January? I want to make things as easy and fun as possible but since Christmas Carol is such a holiday themed book, it seemed to make sense to have our discussion happen in December.  Anyway, I am hoping to have all this figured out and finalized by Tuesday so if you have any feedback or suggestions, leave a comment and let me know what they are.

And if you would like to join in our book club read of A Christmas Carol, you can sign up here.
