Of Pirates, Patriotism, and the Great American Novel

Summer is in full blast and I am loving it! Some of you may remember that I have declared this to be my Summer of Adventure and have decided to give my summer reading list an adventure theme. I’ve really enjoyed stepping out of my girly reading comfort zone and checking out all the classic action and adventures stories I never got around to reading before. My most recent read was Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.  I’ve always had a soft spot for pirates, so even if the pirates in Treasure Island weren’t as dashing and charming as the ones I normally crush on.. read about, I still had a lot of fun reading the book and it made me want to hoist anchor and sail off to drink rum and dig for buried treasure (or at least read about digging for buried treasure) on a Caribbean island somewhere.

Since that isn’t an option for me right now, I opted to design some pirate themed jewelry instead. I ended up making this cool Treasure Island Pirate Pendant with a skull and crossbones design surrounded by text from the book, including the iconic pirate quote: “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!” I really love how the antique gold finish on this pendant reminds me of a doubloon or pieces of eight from a pirate’s treasure chest. I think that adds a lot to the pirate-y tone of the piece.

And then, since I still had pirates on the brain, I set a course for Neverland and designed this Captain Hook Bangle Bracelet. One of my favorite things about this new bracelet is that it looks cute when worn on its own but you can also wear it together with this Peter Pan and Wendy bracelet for a whimsical Peter Pan – themed stacking bangle set. I love the way the two of them look together so much that I decided to offer a 10% discount for customers who want to buy them as a set and I have plans to add a Tinkerbell bracelet to the series sometime soon. Stay tuned!

Of course when I am not dreaming of running off to sea with pirates, I am really looking forward to the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Since I’m all about books, my favorite way to celebrate Independence Day is to obsess about great works of American literature, especially those great books that capture something about the American experience or the American dream. This year, I decided to do a series of literary outfits inspired by iconic American books and showcase them here on the blog. I started with two outfits, one inspired by Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and featuring my Little Women Novel Tea Necklace and the other inspired by The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, featuring my Great Gatsby Boat Pendant.

I am working on a couple more Fourth of July outfits inspired by the great American novel and hope to have them ready to share when we get closer to the weekend. So stay tuned. Well, that’s it for me today. I hope you enjoyed this post. Until next time, take care and happy reading!
