Mother’s Day is just a week away and what better way to celebrate that a Mother’s Day brunch with Marmee and her girls: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy from the classic book, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott? Although the book starts at Christmas – time, it always reminds me of Mother’s Day. I guess that’s because it is one of the things that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations in my family. It also doesn’t hurt that Marmee is one of my favorite fictional mothers and that, with the exception of poor Beth, each of her girls grow up to be happy and loving mothers themselves.
Mother’s Day, as an official holiday, didn’t exist back when Little Women was written but if it had, you know that the March family would have celebrated it in style! And this got me thinking – what would a modern day Jo March wear to Mother’s Day brunch with Marmee and her sisters? I knew tomboy Jo wouldn’t wear anything too frilly or fussy but with her big personality and love of theatrics, it needed to have a little pop of color so I paired a red tank, striped boyfriend blazer, jeans and a fun pair of red sneakers with my Little Women Novel Tea Necklace. Because Jo was a reader and a writer, I added a big bag with lots of room for a book (or two) and a notebook for jotting down ideas for her next story. The only thing I can’t decide is whether or not a modern day Jo would keep her thick, beautiful hair tossed up in a no-fuss, messy bun or cropped short in a boyish pixie cut. What do you think?
