Discovering The Secret Garden

Discovering The Secret Garden

Outside my window the sun is shining and the snow is melting and everything is looking like spring may finally be on its way. And if that wasn’t enough to put a smile on my face, today is the day when the CSLJ Book Club officially begins reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The Secret Garden is a childhood favorite of mine and a book that I love to re-read in early spring when every new sprout, bud, and leaf feels like a little bit of Magic!

About the CSLJ Book Club
For those of you who are new to the book club, here’s how it works. From now until April 15th, we all read the book. (If you don’t happen to have a copy on hand, you can read it online here.) And after that, we will have a week-long discussion of the book. Every day, I will post a new discussion question (here on my blog and here on the C. S. Literary Jewelry Facebook page) to help get the conversation started. To participate, simply leave a comment on either post and then check back periodically to read and respond to the comments that other book club members have made.

If you would like to join in the fun and would like to receive reminders and notifications of when the questions have been posted, you can sign up here.

A Secret Garden Inspired Knit Along
I don’t know how many knitters and crafters will be joining us this time around but I am so excited that spring is on its way and so happy to be reading my favorite book with you all that I decided to start a new knitting project inspired by the book. I found this lovely knitted shawl pattern with a sweet floral border that I think will be the perfect companion knit to The Secret Garden and I was wondering if anyone would like to join me in a Secret Garden inspired Knit Along. If you are interested, the pattern is Celandine Shawl by Susan Hanlon of Yellow Ginger Designs and you can get more information  / buy the pattern here.

If you are planning on joining us for our discussion of The Secret Garden or would like to do the knit-a-long with me, leave a comment here on the blog or over here on our Facebook page and introduce yourself.

  1. Hi! I’m Kerry. I am an obsessive reader, knitter, and designer of literary jewelry inspired by classic books and poetry.

Although I have read The Secret Garden before, I am really looking forward to re-reading it and discussing it with all of you.

I also can’t wait to start the knit along project. I have never made a shawl before but this one looks very manageable and I have already found the perfect yarn to make it out of. I want a slightly bigger shawl so I am going to make mine out of Madeline Tosh DK in their gorgeous Thyme colorway. I still have to wait for my yarn to arrive before I can cast on but I am really looking forward to making this Secret Garden themed shawl to keep me warm during the early months of spring.
