With the rush and craziness of the holidays behind us, I think this is the perfect time to discuss which book we should read next. I had so much fun discussing A Christmas Carol with everyone and since winter is one of my favorite times to curl up with a great book, I am really looking forward to our next read.

Some of you suggested some great books, including: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (a personal favorite of mine). Since we are most likely going to be doing the majority of our reading and discussion in February, I thought it might be nice to read something romantic in honor of Valentine’s Day or maybe choose a book by an African American writer in honor of African American History Month and so, I would like to add Jane Austen’s Emma (which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year) and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple to the list of possibilities. (Of course there are plenty of other African American writers we could read but since Alice Walker’s birthday is February 9th, it just seemed appropriate to choose one of her books).
What do you think? Do you have any other books you want to add to the list of considerations? Do any of these suggestions sound particularly good to you? Let me know in the comments!
