Book Review – The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday. Mine has been absolutely lovely with lots of books, yarn, and all sorts of wonderful goodies under the tree for me.

It’s been a busy holiday season for me, with little to no time for reading, so I decided to give myself a Christmas treat and spend an evening reading The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum in front of the Christmas tree. It was my first time reading this delightful fairy story and I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. It was a quick read – it took the same amount of time to get through as a plate of cookies and a couple of cups of cocoa – but it was light and charming and the lovely illustrations by Mary Cowles Clark added to the charm and whimsy of the story.

I am about halfway through J.R.R. Tolkien’s Letters From Father Christmas, which I am also enjoying very much, and I can easily see both books becoming part of my family’s holiday traditions. Do you have a favorite Christmas book or story that you read every year? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Now if you will excuse me, I want to get some more reading in before I head off to a holiday gathering with my family. Until next time, have a very Merry Christmas and a Bookish New Year!

  1. When my daughters were at home (they’re now both in their 40’s) we used to read/or listen to on the gramaphone (dates me, eh?) the story of “The Night Before Christmas”. They’d had their baths, and evening meals, and this was the last thing they did after saying their prayers. Neither actually remember the final verse(s)!!

  2. We never had the tradition of reading Christmas stories at home. I remember though that one year I took up a book of compilations and read from it to the whole family (I was maybe 14, so I don’t remember the story anymore :))
Hope you had a great Christmas.

  3. I think we all need to find sometime for ourselves and you have found a relaxing and enjoyable way to do so. Reading can be a joy and transport you to places you would never have experienced.

Enjoy the rest of your Christmas and see you in the new year.
