Back to School – English Major Style

It’s that time of year again. Time to head back to school and start another school year. All over the country and English majors are packing up their books, setting up their dorm rooms, and getting ready for to start a new semester of reading, writing, and studying. But just in case you need a little help coming up with ways to make your school year awesomely bookish, here’s some inspiration and ideas for book lovers, writers, and bibliophiles who want to give their back to school style and dorm room decor a little literary flair.

First up, my back to school outfit. I wanted something casual, quick, and easy that would work for running off to class, all-nighters in the library, or grabbing a bite to eat with friends down at the student union. So I went with a classic t-shirt and jeans combination. To give this look some literary style, I chose a Virginia Woolf graphic tee from Out of Print Clothing and a Virginia Woolf Writers Necklace from the C. S. Literary Jewelry Etsy shop. I finished off the look by adding some cute but comfortable sneakers and a oversized messenger bag for carrying all your books and notebooks and stuff.

And now for the dorm room. Decorating your dorm room is a great way to express your personality and to create a home away from home that is both comfy and functional. Of course, a great bookshelf for your book collection is a MUST. You can also get some much-needed extra storage by adding a couple of baskets or canvas storage cubes. I recommend getting a bean bag chair and/or lots of throw pillows for your room. They’re great for creating a cozy spot to read, write, and study and they come in handy as extra seating when friends come to hang out. (Check out this fun Catcher in the Rye pillow!) And be sure to pick up some bookish prints and posters to decorate your walls with. I have an entire Pinterest board of bookish art, prints, and posters you can check out but I especially recommend this Typographical American Authors Print by Creative Daffodil. I also love this T. S. Eliot Art Print by Obvious State with the quote, “I have measured out my life in coffee spoons.” It just seems perfect for an English major’s dorm room, especially when their are papers to write and midterms to study for.
